Let's Admit It: Everyone Hates Menopause

Menopause is an inevitable stage and marks a significant point in every woman's life. It comes with symptoms and complications most women dread. Some women look forward to menopause because it marks the end of their monthly periods and the excruciating pains they go through every month. While some women look forward to menopause, it's not exactly a walk in the park. Every woman deals with menopause differently. For some women, menopause is a difficult thing to deal with while for others, it's as easy as breathing. Even with the "no big deal" attitude, no woman wants to be reminded that she's getting old or can no longer have kids. Along with menopause, comes hot flashes, anger, body pains, anxiety, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, vaginal dryness and other side effects.

Here are some of the reasons why people hate menopause:

  • Hormones start to change during menopause: During menopause, women's hormones go through a process of transformation. Their levels of hormones fluctuate. This may alter their well-being physically, emotionally and mentally. Physically, your body goes through a series of changes. You could start experiencing a sudden hot flashes - the most common symptom of menopause in women. You may also start experiencing dryness down there, irritated skin, night sweats, and even sleeplessness. Emotionally, you may have mood swings. It's natural to experience sadness, rage, unexplainable tears and mood swings during menopause. They just mean hormones are at play. Also, anxiety is one of the emotional downsides of menopause. The changes in the levels of the hormone that happen in your body may cause you to feel anxious. During menopause, three hormones are at play - they are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The change of estrogen and progesterone in your body can cause feelings of anxiety. Symptoms of anxiety during menopause can be psychological and physical. You may experience restlessness, chest pain, and racing thoughts. You may also feel nervous, fearful, tense, and so on. You may start sweating, shaking and may experience diarrhea, nausea and sleep problems. According to research, it takes at least 4.5 years after the last period and 7.4 years in total to be free of the emotional effects of menopause.
  • You become forgetful and find it hard to concentrate during menopause: People also hate menopause because it makes them forget things easily. They find it hard to concentrate on various aspects of their life. They may start having a hard time focusing at work... Or start forgetting important events and dates or even birthdays of children and grandchildren. This is due from the hormones clouding your thought patterns and blocking memory retrieval. Sometimes, this makes some women feel inadequate, as they feel they are incapable of recollecting important events and dates that mean so much to them. So, when you find yourself trying so hard or struggling to recollect things and can't remember or when you find it hard to focus on tasks at hand, relax. You are not alone and you are not losing your mind, menopause is only playing its game. Brain fog during menopause can also be common.
  • Throbbing pain in your head during menopause: Although this isn't exactly common in all women going through menopause. For women who experience this, it is one of the things they hate about menopause. Headache during menopause is a result of the hormonal changes in your body. Your estrogen levels decline and your body may produce less progesterone and testosterone. Headaches are therefore triggered when there's a fluctuation in your estrogen levels. Even though sex might be the last thing on your mind when you have a headache, having sex is shown to help alleviate certain headaches. They believe the release of endorphins acts as a natural pain reliever!
